Family Radio Service (FRS) Radios
Family Radio Service (FRS) radios can be purchased anywhere and used by anyone. You do not need a license, so kids can use these radios too! Another nice thing about FRS radios is they are affordable. For example, the Midland brand is highly recommended by search and rescue experts, has a three-year warranty, and a pair of Midland X-10 X-TALKER costs only $30!
After months of research, we ended up choosing the Midland X-TALKER 36 model of radio. While slightly more expensive, they had a few more features than the Midland - T10 X-TALKER. We have been testing the X-TALKER 36 radios for about a week (as of 9/4/2021). So far, we are very impressed. The sound quality is extremely good, and the range is impressive, especially if all parties are outside.
During our testing, we have been able to communicate fairly well from 23rd and South Meyler, all the way to Cabrillo and 17th. We've found that the radios work a lot better if you are outside, and with fewer obstructions between the communicating parties. At a maximum, we have been able to communicate reasonably well at a total distance of around 2,000 feet.
If you choose to purchase the Midland X-TALKER 36 model and wish to program it so that you can participate in our monthly radio check-in, please follow these instructions:
Join the AlmaNet Radio Check-in!!!
You can participate with any Family Radio Service (FRS) walkie-talkie, or a HAM radio, or both!
We meet the second Saturday of each month at 5:30pm!
For initial check-in, we will use our FRS radios, so tune to channel 6!
Lastly, licensed ham radio operators will check in on frequency 147.510, with a PL privacy tone of 71.9.
If you’ve been issued a special commercial radio by our group, join us on channel 3.
The whole check-in should take less than 20 minutes, and makes excellent practice for emergency communications.
